We collected a load of oversized steel sections from Suffolk and delivered them to a construction site in the City of London. The vehicle was a Scania flatbed, suited to carrying long and heavy structural steel that cannot travel on a standard enclosed trailer. Construction is a sector where delivery timing and site access are tightly managed, and getting structural materials to the right place at the right time has a direct bearing on what the site team can do that day.
Delivering oversized structural steel to a city centre site demands careful planning at every stage
Oversized loads require a different level of operational thinking than standard freight. When you are moving structural steel into a working city centre construction site, the challenges compound quickly. Site access windows are narrow, surrounding roads carry pedestrian traffic and other contractors, and there is rarely space to wait or reposition at the kerbside. A load that arrives at the wrong time, or that cannot be offloaded cleanly, creates knock on delays for the groundworks, steelwork erection and every trade following behind. We planned the movement from Suffolk to the City of London with all of that in mind, coordinating the collection time and the run so that we arrived within the site’s access window and the steel could be unloaded without disrupting the works. The distance from Suffolk into central London carries its own variables, including approach routes, weight restricted streets and the concentration of traffic as you come into the city, and our routing accounted for each of those factors.

Steel sections of this scale are not freight you can slide into the back of a curtain side and hope for the best. A flatbed configuration allows the load to be secured across its full length, with direct access from the sides and above for crane or forklift offload, which is exactly what a construction site expects when receiving structural members. Our Scania flatbed carried the steel sections from Suffolk without compromise to load integrity over a route that moved from rural Suffolk roads out onto the A road network and then into the dense urban approach to the City of London. The vehicle’s size and the nature of the load meant that the final approach required particular care, but the flatbed format gave the site team the straightforward, unobstructed offload they needed to keep their programme on track.
